While the creators, Chris McMullen and Steve Withycombe, have dubbed it PAS (for “Potentially Annoying Sound”), you’re more likely to be fascinated than irked by this interactive and kinetic sculpture. Turn the wheel and set the gears in motion, culminating in a symphonic blast of horn and bellows made possible through the salvaged remnants of a 1930s pipe organ.

At the aLIVe exhibit, you can ride a Rejuiced Bike, check out the Walk & Roll, get your own Undriver License™ and make a model Low Impact Vehicle. (The term "low impact" references both pedestrian safety and environmental sustainability.) In order to stimulate a conversation that goes well beyond the bikes-vs.-cars debate, founding organizer Cheryl dos Remedios collaborates with other artists to explore our transportation system -- using everything from poetry to prototypes. Agitator, provocateur and instigator extraordinaire, Orange Man can enliven the dullest of situations with his electrifying presence. Orange Man will be wandering the Festival with huge orange balloons, while passing out smaller balloons to patrons. These floating orbs of color will dot the Bumbershoot grounds, constantly moving and creating new connections.

Using a method by which words or images are collectively assembled, interactive curator Leslie Lyons will produce a video story entitled Expedition over the three day Bumbershoot festival. Participants will be given 45-60 seconds to make their narrative contributions. Themes will include birth, dreaming, kissing, friends, love, and magic, and will be uploaded to leslielyons.com throughout the weekend.

This is an interactive and fully immersive paint-by-number art exhibit curated by Seattle artistsMarlow Harris and JoDavid. Featuring an interactive paint-by-number homage to Edouard Manet's "The Picnic" ("Le Dejeuner sur L'Herbe") by artist Ryan Feddersen, which will be completed through audience participation. Also featured are the amazing life-size paint-by-number banners and guitars of Victoria BC artist Bill Blair. W. Scott Trimble's sculptural installation is a fantastic obstacle course that includes a 360-degree skate pipe, skate bowl extension towers, a freestanding quarter pipe, ramps over obstacles, and more impossible structures that would taunt the most seasoned and reckless of skateboarders -- if they were allowed to skate on it.

The Magic Show is a multi-media exhibit that will dazzle and amaze. Video, photography, and sculpture will defy explanation and explore illusion, conjuring, levitation, and transformation. Northwest Tap Connection, directed by Melba Ayco, is a distinctive urban dance studio specializing in Rhythm Tap. The studio was the recipient of the City of Seattle 2009 Mayor’s Arts Award and students of the studio have performed in Seattle Theatre Group’s DANCE This since 2003.

DE CAJóN is born of the rich musical heritage of Peruvian Afro-descendants. “De cajón” is a Peruvian expression meaning “for sure,” “rain or shine,” and “without question.” Cajón is also the name of a box-shaped drum, the driving percussive element at the heart of this genre.

The results are a smart, funny and bawdy show performed by the folks behind Jet City Improv and Twisted Flicks. For each performance, the cast will create completely new plots and characters. Originally inspired by Bonnie and Clyde, Bonnie & The Robberie is a dark love song for a culture obsessed with women with guns. 2010 Stranger Genius Award winner Marya Sea Kaminski performs a collection of rock covers, original songs, and monologues exploring themes of violence, love and firearms backed by the kickass band Landlord's Daughter. The full show, titled Riddled, Or the Bonnie Papers, will premiere at the Hugo House in June 2012.

Orange Man will be wandering the Festival with huge orange balloons, while passing out smaller balloons to patrons. These floating orbs of color will dot the Bumbershoot grounds, constantly moving and creating new connections.

Using a method by which words or images are collectively assembled, interactive curator Leslie Lyons will produce a video story entitled Expedition over the three day Bumbershoot festival. Participants will be given 45-60 seconds to make their narrative contributions. Themes will include birth, dreaming, kissing, friends, love, and magic, and will be uploaded to leslielyons.com throughout the weekend.

This is an interactive and fully immersive paint-by-number art exhibit curated by Seattle artists Marlow Harris and JoDavid. Featuring an interactive paint-by-number homage to Edouard Manet's "The Picnic" ("Le Dejeuner sur L'Herbe") by artist Ryan Feddersen, which will be completed through audience participation. Also featured are the amazing life-size paint-by-number banners and guitars of Victoria BC artist Bill Blair. Nathan Larson was the lead guitarist of influential prog-punk outfit Shudder To Think and is an award-winning film music compositor (Boys Don't Cry, Dirty Pretty Things, The Messenger.) Kristin Hersh is a solo artist as well as lead singer and guitarist for Throwing Muses and 50FOOTWAVE. Her newest album, Crooked, was released as a book and her memoir Rat Girl (titled Paradoxical Undressing outside the US) was published by Penguin USA. Nelson George is one of the first writers to document hip hop culture and is the author of several award-winning books on the subject, including Hip Hop America; he also co-authored Russell Simmons' autobiography Life and Def. George directed Queen Latifah in the HBO film Life Support, and is an executive producer of VH1's long-running Hip Hop Honors broadcast. His forthcoming novel, The Plot Against Hip Hop, will be released in November.

Savage Love columnist/editorial director of The Stranger Dan Savage and his husband Terry Miller bring the It Gets Better Project to our stage. Started in 2010, the It Gets Better Project was created to show LGBT youth that their lives can reach their fullest potential if they can just make it through their teen years, which all too often involves being bullied and harassed for their sexual orientation. The It Gets Better Project now includes over 25,000 inspiring videos letting teens in the LGBT community know that they are not alone — and things WILL get better.

Formed by Gibby Haynes and Paul Leary in Texas in the early '80s, the Butthole Surfers amassed countless notorious live shows along with their mix of psychedelia, punk rock, and noise. They have a unique legacy that continues into the 21st century.

Still in his early twenties, Allen Stone's voice stands out amongst the best in a new generation of soul singers. Integrating classic soul, catchy pop hooks, R&B beats, and folk roots, Stone crafts evocative songs with his smooth, soul-filled voice -- one that certainly belies his age.

Considered the ultimate session man, pianist Leon Russell lent his signature gospel-infused Southern boogie to some of rock n' roll's biggest names (Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, etc.) He was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2011. Brooklyn resident Eugene Mirman escaped the clutches of Russian communism at the age of four when his family immigrated from Moscow, and he’s been making audiences laugh ever since. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are two names currently inseparable from the Northwest's vibrant and growing hip-hop scene. Bumbershoot's Indie Market will showcase over one hundred artists, crafters and designers selling clothing, accessories, art and clever creations.

While the creators, Chris McMullen and Steve Withycombe, have dubbed it PAS (for “Potentially Annoying Sound”), you’re more likely to be fascinated than irked by this interactive and kinetic sculpture. Turn the wheel and set the gears in motion, culminating in a symphonic blast of horn and bellows made possible through the salvaged remnants of a 1930s pipe organ.

At the aLIVe exhibit, you can ride a Rejuiced Bike, check out the Walk & Roll, get your own Undriver License™ and make a model Low Impact Vehicle. (The term "low impact" references both pedestrian safety and environmental sustainability.) In order to stimulate a conversation that goes well beyond the bikes-vs.-cars debate, founding organizer Cheryl dos Remedios collaborates with other artists to explore our transportation system -- using everything from poetry to prototypes. Agitator, provocateur and instigator extraordinaire, Orange Man can enliven the dullest of situations with his electrifying presence. Orange Man will be wandering the Festival with huge orange balloons, while passing out smaller balloons to patrons. These floating orbs of color will dot the Bumbershoot grounds, constantly moving and creating new connections.

Using a method by which words or images are collectively assembled, interactive curator Leslie Lyons will produce a video story entitled Expedition over the three day Bumbershoot festival. Participants will be given 45-60 seconds to make their narrative contributions. Themes will include birth, dreaming, kissing, friends, love, and magic, and will be uploaded to leslielyons.com throughout the weekend.

This is an interactive and fully immersive paint-by-number art exhibit curated by Seattle artistsMarlow Harris and JoDavid. Featuring an interactive paint-by-number homage to Edouard Manet's "The Picnic" ("Le Dejeuner sur L'Herbe") by artist Ryan Feddersen, which will be completed through audience participation. Also featured are the amazing life-size paint-by-number banners and guitars of Victoria BC artist Bill Blair. W. Scott Trimble's sculptural installation is a fantastic obstacle course that includes a 360-degree skate pipe, skate bowl extension towers, a freestanding quarter pipe, ramps over obstacles, and more impossible structures that would taunt the most seasoned and reckless of skateboarders -- if they were allowed to skate on it.

The Magic Show is a multi-media exhibit that will dazzle and amaze. Video, photography, and sculpture will defy explanation and explore illusion, conjuring, levitation, and transformation. The music of indie-folksters Motopony is not content to sit still. Lilting guitars, syncopated drums, dreamy atmospherics, and Daniel Blue's captivating vocals sprint off in different directions, but always manage to end up together in the same, glorious compositions.

The Horde and the Harem is a ragged band of untrustables boasting smoldering guitars, tight harmonies, and a blistering rhythm section. The resulting sound is a thick layer of melody that infiltrates your senses, lodging into your brain and cursing you with their inherent catchiness.

Seattle's mobile Balkan brass band starts with traditional SE European wedding and funeral tunes, adds a hip-hop backbeat, and crafts its own Balkan-influenced originals. The Stranger says "Orkestar Zirkonium may well be my favorite band in Seattle" and "One couldn't really ask for a better ecstatic party band." We couldn't either.

Youth and adult poetry slam champions go head to head to see whose spoken word will reign supreme! Youth Speaks Seattle Slam Team takes on the adults of Seattle Poetry Slam Team on the Leo K. Theatre stage. Both teams represent the top-ranking Seattle poets in their age brackets and are nationally ranked and recognized. This is the definitive showdown to decide whose poetry and performance prevails and is not to be missed.

The Boise-based and highly sought-after choreographer Trey McIntyre focuses on creating works that explore the human experience in transformative and captivating ways. Supported in part by Culture Ireland and organized in collaboration with Dublin UNESCO City of Literature, this panel features three acclaimed contemporary Irish novelists who will discuss how the romanticism and legend of Dublin has impacted their own writing. Chris Binchy was shortlisted for Irish Novel of the Year in 2003 for The Very Man and has since published People Like Us, Open-handed and last year's Five Days Apart. Kevin Holohan is a Dublin-born writer whose debut novel, The Brother's Lot, was published in 2011 to much acclaim. Claire Kilroy has published three novels, All Summer, Tenderwire and All Names Have Been Changed. All Summer won the 2004 Rooney Prize for Irish Literature and was shortlisted for the 2004 Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award. Moderated by Fidelma McGinn, Executive Director of Artist Trust and the founder/director of the Irish Reels Arts Festival.

Joel Schneider and Ethan Jacobsen music epitomizes the purest distillation of rock with fuzzed-out guitars and deafening drums, played straight with no chaser. The pair harnesses the essence of their influences (The White Stripes, Black Keys) to create a sound born out of the heart of rock and roll.
This live show can be described as a celebration of creativity and inclusiveness. Brian Vogan teaches music to infants to preschool-aged children and the songs he writes are directly inspired by the interests and ideas of the kids he educates.

Grace Lin's Newbery Honors children's book, Where The Mountain Meets The Moon, comes to life through Book-It -- a vibrant literature-based theatre company that transforms great works of prose into exciting staged works. Join heroine Minli on her magical journey to change her family's fortune, discovering a wealth of wisdom and friendship along the way.

Olivier Wevers, a Pacific Northwest Ballet principal dancer, founded this non-profit organization to make the world of dance accessible to a broader audience by combining the talents of dancers, choreographers, composers, and other performers in unorthodox ways. For Bumbershoot, Whim W'Him will be presenting a collection of works, (including a collaboration with RA Scion called Monster) which explore monsters, relationships, addiction, and the treachery of images in our lives.

Emerald City Improv is Seattle's only Street Improv group, embracing the city as a stage. Their events are designed to break into your day to make you laugh and smile. They have been staging events around the city since 2009.

Wayne Federman is a multi-talented comedian, author, and actor. In addition to a stint as head monologue writer for NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Federman has also appeared in The X-Files, The Larry Sanders Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Step Brothers.
Hide yo’ kids! Hide yo’ wife! The Gregory Brothers, the fearsome foursome behind some of the biggest viral videos in recent memory, are invading Bumbershoot. Whether auto-tuning the news or remixing C-Span, The musical stylings of The Gregory Brothers (Evan, Michael, Andrew, and Evan’s wife Sarah) are not to be missed.

Funbucket is an improvised comedy extravaganza. Featuring some of Seattle's most skilled improvisors, it’s a mainstay of Wing-It Productions.

Calling himself a "jack of all trades", Outkast founder Big Boi has released many hip hop gems since branching out solo. Thoughtful lyrics and high energy are trademarks of his live shows which have garnered him critical acclaim and an ever growing following.

Sean Horton, aka DJ Nordic Soul, is an adroit producer, performer, and programmer who infuses his emotionally charged tracks with live instrumentation and a mélange of organic and synthesized tones, all riding atop a pulsating wave of heavy bass lines.

Purity Ring is the futuristic pop project of Corin Roddick and Megan James. The duo makes glam lullabies designed for the club, drawing equally from airy '90s R&B, lush dream-pop, and the powerful immediacy of the very best modern indie-pop.

The duo of YACHT traffics a brand of indie-pop heavy with four-on-the-floor drum beats, glitched-out synth lines, and dance-friendly melodies. Helmed by Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, the band's buoyant and bright party jams practically take flight when played live.

Charlane Tucker is an aspiring country singer on a mission: find 100 men who'll love her and leave her so she can accumulate enough suffering to be taken seriously in Nashville. A tongue-in-cheek comedy with lots of heart, written by and starring Seattle-based writer, actor and country singer Joanna Horowitz, 100 Heartbreaks is part theater and part barroom country show -- with a live band!

This program is an hour-long exploration of living without using, wearing, or eating animal products. The panelists are made up of an extremely diverse group who represent veganism to their specific scenes – YouTube sensation Vegan Black Metal Chef, Kevin Tillman (founder of the Vegan Hip-Hop Movement blog), The Redwood Plan bassist Larry Brady and Moderator Greg Bennick (keynote speaker, humanitarian activist, award winning producer/writer and singer of Seattle hardcore band Trial!)
